This is really the best feature of VF2! The DIP switch mode 0–1 somehow almost purely electrical, forcing the board to load system firmware (SPL and U-Boot) directly from the SD card.
So you write the image to an SD card, set the DIP switch to SD mode, then you essentially bypass the onboard firmware.
